Dreaming to sail solo around the world has kept many sailors and adventurers awake at night in recent history. Many races are a testimony to such a dream. From the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968/1969 to the unfolding Vendée Globe 2020/2021.
While most of these races were born out of the same desire for adventure, they have evolved in opposite directions.
The Golden Globe Race has transformed in a traditional event characterized by vintage sailing, with yachts designed prior 1988. It is a hymn to the old tradition, the golden age.
The Vendée Globe has, on the other hand, evolved into a display of technology advancement and the experience is as much for its watchers following at home as for the sailors on their semi-flying rockets.
The “Global Solo Challenge” fills the gap. Any of us, dreaming that ultimate adventure, neither wanting to go vintage, nor top athlete and being able to tap into large sponsorships, has its opportunity. Any production boat built prior 2005 in a series of at least 20 unit, approximately between 35 and 40ft and a displacement over 5.500kgs (safety requirements based on OSR Mono-hull Category 0).
Further guidelines will be shortly published on Global Solo Challenge – Singlehanded round the world with production boats
