Midsummer Solo Challenge 2022

Things where still looking bright and only a Seascape 27 ahead

Last weekend I participated to a very awaited Midsummer Solo Challenge 2022.

It was my fourth time and in spite of not being a race, I always found the atmosphere very pleasant and a quite unique opportunity. Reports from previous editions 2021 2020

I have been very much looking forward to experiment life aboard a J/80 on such an adventure.

Forecasts were not looking great. Expected strong winds on the nose, against the current and big swell, lots of rain throughout the night.

Expected increasing winds.

At the skippers meeting, on the night before starting, it was pointed out that winds would be gusting up to 40 knots.

All set to start

In the morning, I decided to start and see how it would develop. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, after just a few hours, I lost a nut and the boom came undone at the gooseneck. I lashed it in place, but didn’t feel comfortable in entering the night solo in the expected conditions.

With a heavy heart I took the decision to turn back.

I took the opportunity to train taking and shaking off reefs at the jib and main in controlled winds and disturbed waves. Quite insightful, in fact.

In the end, the expected conditions arrived and many of those out there quit during the evening or night, some docked and paused for the night, some had rudder or rigging trouble needing assistance from the sea rescue.

Kudos to those few who got around and completed!

Now waiting for the pictures taken by Båt Agent, sponsor of the event.
